Shopify Automatic Discounts: When to Skip the Code, and When It Still Won't Show

Choose a Shopify automatic discount when the cart should save without a code, and check eligibility, Combinations, and the 25-cap if Active still won't show.

If you run a Shopify store, choose the discount method before you rewrite the offer: run it as an automatic discount when the cart should get the savings without anyone typing a string, or as a discount code when you need gated redemption, partner or email exclusivity, or urgency tied to a code. If an Active automatic discount still does not appear on cart or checkout, work eligibility, Combinations, channel and POS rules, segments, Scripts pricing order, and the 25-active automatic cap—not the typed-code failure checklist.

This is an admin decision and diagnosis guide. It is not a shopper list of “good discount codes,” and it does not walk Shopify’s create-click path. Rules below follow Shopify Help on automatic discounts, discount codes, and combining discounts.

Decision rule: Use an automatic discount when the offer should apply without a typed code. Use a discount code when you need gated redemption, partner or email exclusivity, or urgency tied to a string. If an Active automatic discount still does not show, check cart eligibility (including Buy X Get Y buy and get lines), Combinations with any code already on the cart, sales-channel and POS rules, segment membership, Scripts price order, and whether you already hit 25 active automatic discounts (including apps).

Treat an Active automatic discount that still won’t show like a desk checklist—eligibility, Combinations, the 25-cap, channels/POS—before you rewrite the percentage.

Automatic discount or discount code?

Shopify’s automatic method applies in the cart and checkout when eligibility is met—customers do not enter a code, which is separate from a compare-at price you type beside Price. Help frames common uses as site-wide sales, collection promotions, and bulk purchases. Automatic offers can be amount-off, free shipping, Buy X Get Y, or app-based automatic discounts.

A discount code is a string the customer enters at checkout. Help positions codes for email campaigns, partnerships, exclusivity, and urgency. When that string should be shared, limited to one use per customer, or unique per recipient, the usage choice is Shopify unique discount codes. Forgotten codes can contribute to abandonment in a way automatic offers do not, because there is nothing to mistype when the cart qualifies.

Use this method when… Prefer
Every qualifying cart should get the offer without typing Automatic discount
Site-wide, collection, or bulk pricing should apply quietly Automatic discount
You need a string for email, influencers, or a partner Discount code
Redemption should feel exclusive or time-bound to a code Discount code
You must share one offer string across channels that rely on a typed code Discount code

You still configure dates, product or collection scope, minimums, customer eligibility, and Combinations on either method. Choosing automatic does not skip those constraints—it only removes the typed string.

Do not treat “I toggled Active” as proof the storefront will show the offer. Active means the discount can apply when the cart and customer match; it is not a guarantee that every cart qualifies.

When an Active automatic discount still won’t show

Work this list in order. Stop when you find the mismatch; do not jump to rewriting the percentage.

Check What to verify
Cart eligibility Customer added every required item, including Buy X Get Y buy lines and get lines; customer themselves is eligible
Combinations Any code (or other discount) already on the cart is allowed to combine with this automatic offer’s class—and the reverse
Active automatic cap You have fewer than 25 active automatic discounts, including app-created ones
Channel / POS Online Store or supported channel; for POS, automatic discounts need POS Pro location settings or a valid Retail market
Segment Segment-restricted offers apply to existing customer profiles; first-time shoppers are not in the segment until after their first order
Scripts Scripts run before automatic discounts; savings calculate from script-adjusted line prices, not original prices
Surface Admin-created automatic discounts do not apply on the checkout post-purchase page

Eligibility and BXGY carts

Shopify requires the customer to add every eligible or qualifying item—including items they must buy and promotional items they receive—and to meet customer eligibility. A Buy X Get Y automatic offer that looks “Active” still stays invisible when the get product is missing from the cart or the buy quantity is short.

Combinations with a code already on the cart

An automatic discount and a discount code can share a cart only when each discount’s Combinations setting allows the other’s class. If they cannot combine, Shopify keeps the best discount or best allowed combination—not every offer you intended. When automatic fails beside a code, Help says to verify both combination settings, that all cart products meet both eligibility rules, and that you have not hit the 25-active automatic limit.

For the full class matrix and same-cart retest order, use Shopify discount combinations. This article only covers enough stacking to explain non-appearance.

The 25-active automatic ceiling

Shopify caps active automatic discounts at 25, and that total includes app-based automatic discounts. The same ceiling is the maximum that can apply to one order. A forgotten app offer still counts against the pool and can block a new campaign you just published.

Channels, POS, and segments

Automatic discounts apply on configured sales channels. On POS, Help limits activation to POS Pro locations (“Apply on POS Pro locations” when eligibility is All customers, or a valid Retail market for Markets eligibility). Segment-specific discounts need an existing customer profile; a first order is what puts a new shopper into the segment afterward.

Scripts and post-purchase

If Scripts adjust line prices, automatic discounts calculate from those adjusted prices, not the pre-script catalog price—so a threshold that “should” qualify on list price may miss after Scripts. Admin-created automatic discounts also do not apply on the checkout post-purchase page; codes cannot be applied there either.

What this article is not

Not a create tutorial. Shopify’s Help pages own the click path for creating automatic discounts and codes. Re-reading those steps will not fix a cart that fails eligibility or Combinations.

Not typed-code failure diagnosis. Invalid codes, wrong items for a code, used-code holds, and a missing discount-code field belong to Shopify discount code not working. CouponRescue addresses failed typed-code attempts; it is not a fix for an automatic discount that never appears.

Not full combination design. Pre-launch stacking across product, order, and shipping classes is Shopify discount combinations.

Practical habits before you launch

  1. Pick the method from the job. Quiet cart-wide or collection pricing → automatic. Gated or partner string → code.
  2. Audit Active automatic discounts—including apps—before adding another; stay under 25.
  3. Build one representative cart with eligible and excluded items, then open checkout far enough to see whether the automatic offer applies; stop before payment.
  4. If a code is also in the campaign, set Combinations on both sides and retest with and without the code.
  5. Match the failure type. No automatic savings and no typed code → this checklist. Customer typed a code that rejects → the not working checklist.

Multi-savings in a single automatic discount or single code (for example order percentage plus free shipping) needs a compatible app or custom app per Discount types. If an app-created discount will not combine, Shopify points you to the app developer and the combinations API—not to a second native toggle.

FAQ

Do automatic discounts replace discount codes?

No. They are different methods for different jobs. Automatic removes typing when the cart qualifies; codes keep a shareable string for campaigns that need one.

Can an automatic discount and a code apply together?

Yes, when Combinations on both sides allow the pairing and the cart qualifies for both. Otherwise Shopify applies the best allowed combination. Details: combining discounts and the combinations guide.

Why does my automatic discount work online but not on POS?

Confirm POS Pro location activation (or Retail market eligibility) in the Discounts FAQ guidance. Automatic discounts are not a free-for-all across every POS setup.

Is “Active” enough for the offer to show?

No. Active means the discount can apply when eligibility, combinations, caps, and channel rules are met. Treat a missing automatic line as a checklist problem, not as proof the percentage is wrong.
