Shopify Discount Combinations: Test What Can Stack Before You Launch

See which Shopify product, order, and shipping discounts can combine on your plan, set Combinations on every discount in the mix, and retest the same cart before launch.

If you run a Shopify store, treat discount combinations as an admin job: decide which product, order, and shipping discounts may stack, turn Combinations on for every discount in that mix, then retest the same cart before the promotion goes live. A toggle on one discount does not invent a stack the other side never allowed.

Shopify’s Combining discounts help is the rulebook for what follows. This article turns those rules into a class matrix, the eligibility gates merchants miss, and a same-cart retest order. It is not a shopper guide to “good discount codes,” and it does not rewrite the full failure checklist in Shopify discount code not working.

Treat stacking rules like a desk checklist—confirm Combinations on every discount in the mix, then retest the same cart before launch.

What can stack on Shopify (by discount class)

Every discount you create belongs to one class: product (items or collections), order (cart subtotal), or shipping (shipping cost). Combinations are class-to-class. Both discounts in a pair must allow that pairing in Combinations—Shopify does not auto-stack active promotions.

Customer code limits still apply even when combinations are allowed: up to five product or order discount codes and one shipping discount code on the same order, and at most 25 active automatic discounts (including app-created ones). Combinations work on Online Store, Storefront API, and Shopify POS orders—not on Facebook, Instagram, Google, or other external checkouts.

Eligibility you must check before promising a stack

Product + order and order + order are not universal. Shopify only offers those combination options when the store has no checkout.liquid customizations or related features and is not using the Licensify app. If Combinations never shows those classes, fix eligibility (or contact Support) before rewriting the campaign copy.

Same-item product stacks need Shopify Plus. You tag the product discounts and set each one to combine with the other’s tags on the same line; the tag setup must be reciprocal. Free shipping discounts can have tags, but they still cannot stack with other shipping discounts.

Buy X get Y adds another constraint. On non-Plus plans, products in a BXGY deal are ineligible for further product discounts; if a code would hit those products, Shopify applies the best overall value for the customer. On Plus, the customer-gets line can combine with same-line product discounts under the tag rules; a code aimed at the customer-buys side can still force a best-value choice instead of a full stack.

App discounts with more than one class in a single discount only combine with other discounts that allow every class they contain. Allowing “order” but not “shipping” is enough to block a multi-class welcome offer that includes free shipping.

Third-party “stack everything” tutorials describe app behavior. Do not treat that as native Shopify combination support.

How Shopify applies stacked discounts

When combinations are allowed, Shopify applies discounts in this order:

  1. Product discounts on individual items
  2. Order discounts on the revised subtotal after product discounts
  3. Shipping discounts last

That order matters for math. An order percentage runs on the subtotal after product discounts, not on the pre-discount merchandise total. If two percentage order discounts both apply, each percentage is calculated on that same revised subtotal (they are not applied one after the other on a shrinking base). Fixed-amount and percentage order discounts together: Shopify applies the percentage first, then the fixed amount.

If two discounts cannot combine, Shopify keeps the best discount or best allowed combination for that cart—not every code the customer typed. Manual custom discounts on draft orders or POS, and discounts from Scripts, can still apply regardless of Combinations settings on other discounts.

Set Combinations on every discount in the mix

In Discounts, open each automatic discount and each code in the campaign. In Combinations, select only the classes you intend to fund. Save, then open the other discount and mirror the pairing. One-sided permission is a common reason merchants say combinations are “a lie” while the admin still looks half-configured.

Practical habits:

  • Name codes so the intended stack is obvious (STACK10 + FREESHIP beats two vague SAVE codes).
  • Filter Discounts by Combines with when auditing a live campaign.
  • Stay under the 25 active automatic-discount ceiling; an invisible automatic discount is still a party to the cart. If an Active automatic discount still won’t show, use Shopify automatic discounts.
  • Prefer editing Combinations on an existing discount over deleting and recreating when only the stack rules change—type and method still cannot be changed in place.

Retest the same cart before you launch

Do not trust the admin form alone. Use one representative cart and walk checkout far enough to see discounts apply, then stop before payment.

  1. Build the cart once. Include an item that should receive a product discount, an item that should not, and a subtotal that can meet any order or free-shipping minimums you set.
  2. Apply discounts in a fixed order. Note automatic discounts first, then enter codes in the same sequence every test. Record the line-item prices, the order discount, and the shipping line.
  3. Flip one variable. Eligible vs excluded product; below vs above minimum; logged-in segment customer vs guest; with vs without the second code; Plus same-line tag pair vs a second product on a different line.
  4. Read the reject message. If codes cannot combine, Shopify may show that a discount could not be used with existing discounts, or that some codes could not be used together and the best combination was applied—wording can vary by surface. Match the message to Combinations and to any automatic discount already on the cart before you rewrite the offer.
  5. Check non-combination failures separately. Wrong items, inactive dates, and usage holds are not combination bugs. When checkout says the code was already used, Shopify unique discount codes covers the unfinished-checkout hold and how a shared code differs from one use per customer or one code per recipient. Use the discount code troubleshooting checklist when the customer sees a reject after your stack test already passed.

Shopify’s own testing notes live in Combining discounts (test section). The Discount codes FAQ covers multi-code carts and invalid or non-combinable entries.

When “combinations on” still fails

Work the list in order:

  1. Both sides allow the classes. Open every discount and automatic offer on that cart.
  2. Eligibility and plan. Missing product+order / order+order options → checkout.liquid or Licensify. Same-line product stack → Plus + reciprocal tags.
  3. BXGY and multi-class app discounts. Confirm whether the cart is hitting BXGY line rules or a multi-class discount that demands shipping permission you never granted.
  4. Best-value replacement. Two non-combinable product offers on overlapping items will not both stick; the better one wins.
  5. Scripts and checkout apps. Scripts and some checkout apps can reject or replace codes outside Combinations.
  6. Channel. External checkouts that do not support combinations will never honor your Online Store stack.

Community threads and posts titled like “combined discounts is a lie” usually land on one of the rows above—not on a secret second rulebook.

FAQ

Do automatic discounts combine with discount codes?

Yes, when each discount’s Combinations setting allows the other’s class and the cart qualifies for both. An automatic discount you forgot about is still “an existing discount” at checkout.

Why don’t I see product + order as a Combinations option?

Your store likely fails Shopify’s eligibility checks for that pairing (no checkout.liquid customizations; not using Licensify). Confirm those requirements in Help before asking Support to enable options the store cannot use.

Can two free shipping discounts stack?

No. Only one shipping discount applies per order. Pair shipping with product or order discounts instead.

Is combination setup the same as fixing a code that fails at checkout?

No. Combinations define which classes may share a cart. A failed or rejected code after launch is a different job—start with admin eligibility and the not working checklist. Combination rules are not failed-code rescue.
